DAILY SCHEDULE AND HIGHLIGHTS
8:30 AM - DAVENING AND LEARNING
Our day begins with tefillah and continues with learning groups. Learning subjects and materials integrate with our experiences of nature. Campers think creatively about Torah sources connected to the experiences they have in nature and make new connections between and interpretations of Torah sources.
Older campers cover significant amount of Mishnah in small groups with staff and LITs. In recent years we have learned all of Masseches Shabbos and Sanhedrin and had a siyum at the end of the summer. Small group learning allows for campers to have focused attention and time to maintain textual skills while learning new areas of Torah over the summer.
9:30 AM - MORNING ACTIVITY
Each regular day has an outdoor morning activity. Our morning activities are more active, so we can capitalize on the cooler morning weather. We go on a variety of local hikes and explorations. We use playful challenges to open children up to new ways of seeing the environment. Each activity has an educational goal to help children experience an aspect of nature more acutely and is flexible and open-ended enough to give the children time for personal explorations and adventures as well. On Fridays we will leave to go off-site for a full day trip.
12:00 PM - RECAP AND LUNCH
We return to our facility and have a quick summary and debriefing of the morning learning and activity. We will then eat lunch indoors. An important piece of outdoor education requires people to see and think about the impacts of their actions on others. Part of our experience of using a host space will include responsible etiquette and clean up at meal time.
1:00-3:30 PM - AFTERNOON ACTIVITY
Afternoon time is generally more flexible with the ability to choose areas of personal interest. Activities follow-up on themes and lessons from earlier in the day. We work on building with found natural materials, learning orienteering skills, map drawing, nature journaling, etc. We also use this time for working on art. Our day ends with a clean up and debriefing summary to encourage reflection and reinforce which questions need further exploration in the future.
